Diploma in Electrical Engineering

Our curricula are designed to outfit for the needs of students, future employees, and employers in the field of Electrical Engineering (EE). Therefore, the program is geared towards producing innovative, creative, flexible work force and entrepreneurs.

Our program delivery is based on Competence Based Education and Training (CBET), learning by doing approach through normal lecturers, laboratory and workshop sessions in every semester.

Electrical engineering personnel may serve in the production, construction, manufacturing and processing industries after successful completion of the respective study requirements.

Currently in this program, training is offered at a Technician level (National Technical award level 6-NTA 6). However in the next academic years the department will be able to offer degree programs on the same.

Programme Philosophy

The philosophy behind the development of this program is geared towards producing a technician who will be creative, innovative and knowledgeable, equipped with practical skills that will make him/her to deliver technical services at professional level. This expertise will be in conformity with the NACTE level descriptor. The philosophy of the program ensures that the graduate will be able to:

(i)                 Promote economic progress through delivering expertise services in the electrical engineering industry;

(ii)               Proceed with further education at higher levels and fostering lifelong learning;

(iii)             Create job opportunities through self-employment scheme;

(iv)             Comply with the NACTE regulations

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the program are to:

a)           Provide basic practical skills necessary for installation, testing commissioning and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.

b)          Establish a sound foundation of scientific principles applied in the filed Electrical and Electronic engineering.

c)           Create awareness and the need of being creative, innovative and self-reliant in tackling Electrical and Electronic engineering problems.

d)          Develop the ability in communicating with all workmates, of all levels to create conducive working environment within the field of Electrical and Electronic engineering.

Admission requirements.

Admission to this program will be open to candidates who have a certificate of Secondary Education with a minimum pass grade of D in Mathematics, Physics / Engineering science, Chemistry, and English or a candidate with a National Vocational Training Certificate level II in electrical offered by VETA, has a secondary education certificate, attended and passed bridging course offered by recognized institution will be considered as a minimum entrance qualification to NTA 4 or passed Mature Age entry examination or attended and passed access course.

Admission to higher NTA levels (5 &6) will be open to those who have passed all modules of either NTA4 (for admission to NTA 5) or NTA 5(for admission to NTA 6) in the similar academic programs from ATC or other institutions with similar academic programs and accredited by NACTE.

Mode of training.

Our students enjoy training delivered by experienced local and international faculties in vast areas of the engineering fields. Every semester we have planned site visits and industrial excursions. Our students enjoy broad range of exposure to various areas of the engineering fields through excursions and existing infrastructures at our workshops, laboratories and industries within and outside the city.

Annually, students shall take industrial internship for ten (10) weeks where they may have access to modern facilities while mingling with industrial supervisors, through this approach our students easily links training at the college with actual applications in the workplaces.

Besides normal practical sessions, we also provide opportunities for students to undertake mini projects on the course of semester training to apply skills and knowledge obtained in specific modules in a respective semester.

With such training approach, we have built competent graduates who serve in the industry as well as self-employment.

Expected competencies.

Students undertaking training in electrical engineering program will end up with numerous of competencies but not limited to work with: electrical installations, measuring instruments and general instrumentations, motor winding, transformer rewinding, power protection and switch gears, power utilization, power electronics, electrical machines, computations using controllers; microcontrollers, PLC however those courses are supplemented with entrepreneurship skills.
