Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering

This program offers both Certificate of Ordinary Diploma and Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering awards. The programs’ curricula are designed to cater for the needs of students, future employees, and employers in the field of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering (EBE). Therefore, the program is geared towards producing innovative, creative, and flexible work force that will be responsive to the societal needs. The program also covers an area of entrepreneurship, which is very essential in this area of stiff job market competition globally.

Admission Requirements. (Done for review)

Admission to our Ordinary Diploma Program will be open to candidates who have a certificate of Secondary Education with a minimum pass grade of D in Mathematics, Physics / Engineering science, Chemistry, and Biology or English.

Admission to higher NTA levels (5 &6) will be open to those who have passed all modules of either NTA4 (for admission to NTA 5) or NTA 5 (for admission to NTA 6) in the similar academic programs from ATC or other institutions with similar academic programs and accredited by NACTE.

Admission to our degree programme will be open only to candidates who have successfully completed and passed all modules of NTA 6 in Biomedical, Electrical, and Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Program Philosophy

The philosophy behind this program contents is geared towards producing innovative, creative and flexible graduates and technicians. As such students are given opportunity to specialise in the fields of their interest.

The philosophy of the programme is based on the following principles and assumptions:

a)      To promote economic progress through delivering expertise services in the electrical and biomedical engineering industry.

b)      To produce graduates who can proceed with further education at higher levels and foster lifelong learning.

c)      To create job opportunities through self employment scheme.

d)     To provide foundations of basic principles, competencies and expertise that will give the greatest opportunity for graduate career development

e)      To facilitate changes in interest, specialities, roles and responsibilities.

f)       To provide in depth understanding of variety of advanced electrical and biomedical engineering applications and systems.

g)      To stimulate student interest in designing related to electrical and biomedical engineering applications and motivation in pursuance of further knowledge, research and imaginative thinking.

h)      To produce graduates who are ready to enter the engineering employment and flexibly satisfy the needs of industry.

i)        To satisfy the requirements of the National Council for Technical Education which is regulating Technical Education in the Country.

Objectives of the program

The objectives of the programme are to establish:

a)      Appropriate basic practical and analytical competencies in product design, development engineering, commissioning and manufacturing processes in the context of the market economy and financial control.

b)      An appreciation that the solution to electrical and biomedical engineering problem must involve the integration of wider engineering disciplines, consideration of their economic and environmental consequences and the employment of non-technical disciplines, such as financial management and marketing, all of which are necessary contributors to the success of the student

c)      Initiative, imagination, perception and confidence sufficient to cope with new situations, problems and ideas by critical analysis of situations, synthesis of practical solutions and application of new idea;

d)     Potential knowledge for creative and critical thinking, including critical self-awareness.

e)      The ability to communicate with members of an organisation and policy makers at the same, higher and lower levels of expertise or responsibility.

Mode of Training

Our students enjoy training delivered by experienced local and international faculties in vast areas of the engineering fields. Every semester we have planned hospital visits and industrial excursions. Our students enjoy broad range of exposure to various areas of the engineering fields through excursions and existing infrastructures at our workshops, laboratories and industries within and outside the city.

Annually, students shall take industrial internship for ten (10) weeks where they may have access to modern facilities while mingling with industrial/hospital supervisors, through this approach our students easily link training at the college with actual applications in the workplaces.

Besides normal practical sessions, we also provide opportunities for students to undertake mini projects on the course of semester training to apply skills and knowledge obtained in specific modules in a respective semester.

With such training approach, we have built competent graduates who would serve in the industry as well as self-employment.

 Expected Competencies

Students undertaking training in Ordinary Diploma in Electrical an Biomedical Engineering are expected to acquire multiple skills ranging from installation, routine, preventive and corrective maintenance, construction, diagnosis, repairs and modifications of simple and medium scale electrical and biomedical systems to developing technical reports, written work procedures and installation guidelines.

On top of the above skills set, students undertaking our degree program will also be able to analyse and design electrical and Biomedical systems for industrial, commercial and Hospital equipment; specify materials, types of installations, production methods and quality standards; establish control on efficient functioning and safety of electrical and Biomedical systems, plan, organize and monitor maintenance and repair of electrical and Biomedical systems, and communicate clearly by applying ICT and other sciences in solving engineering problems.
