Diploma in Electrical Engineering

This program offers Certificate of Ordinary Diploma in Electrical Engineering awards. The programs’ curricula is designed to cater for the needs of students, future employees, and employers in the field of Electrical Engineering (EE). Therefore, the program is geared towards producing innovative, creative, and flexible work force that will be responsive to the societal needs. The program also covers an area of entrepreneurship, which is very essential in this area of stiff job market competition globally.

Admission Requirements.

Admission to our Ordinary Diploma Program will be open to candidates who have a certificate of Secondary Education with a minimum pass grade of D in Mathematics, Physics or Engineering science, Chemistry, and Biology or English.

Admission to higher NTA levels (5 &6) will be open to those who have passed all modules of either NTA4 (for admission to NTA 5) or NTA 5 (for admission to NTA 6) in the similar academic programs from ATC or other institutions with similar academic programs and accredited by NACTE.

Program Philosophy

The philosophy behind the development of this programme is geared towards producing a technician who will be creative, innovative and knowledgeable, equipped with practical skills that will make him/her to deliver technical services at professional level. This expertise will be in conformity with the NACTE level descriptor. The philosophy of the programme assumes that the graduate will be able to:

(i)                 Promote economic progress through delivering expertise services in the electrical engineering industry;

(ii)               Proceed with further education at higher levels and fostering lifelong learning;

(iii)             Create job opportunities through self employment scheme;

(iv)             Comply with the NACTE regulations.

It is therefore expected that graduates of this programme will be flexible and compatible to the drastic changes of technology that prevails today.

The program is of a modular nature and will operate under semester system.  The modular structure allows flexibility of the learning context to be developed to suit a related discipline. It also provides an opportunity to accommodate modules that suit a particular specialty that may be desired by the student.

Objectives of the program

The objectives of the programme are to:

a)      Provide basic practical skills necessary for installation, testing commissioning and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.

b)      Establish a sound foundation of scientific principles applied in the filed Electrical and Electronic engineering.

c)      Create awareness and the need of being creative, innovative and self reliant in tackling Electrical and Electronic engineering problems.

d)     Develop the ability in communicating with all workmates, of all levels to create conducive working environment within the field of Electrical and Electronic engineering.

Mode of Training

Our students enjoy training delivered by experienced local and international faculties in vast areas of the engineering fields. Every student enjoy broad range of exposure to various areas of the engineering fields through excursions and existing infrastructures at our workshops, laboratories and industries within and outside the city.

Annually, students shall take industrial internship for ten (10) weeks where they may have access to modern facilities while mingling with industrial supervisors, through this approach our students easily link training at the college with actual applications in the workplaces.

Besides normal practical sessions, we also provide opportunities for students to undertake mini projects on the course of semester training to apply skills and knowledge obtained in specific modules in a respective semester.

With such training approach, we have built competent graduates who would serve in the industry as well as self-employment.

 Expected Competencies

Students undertaking training in Ordinary Diploma in Electrical Engineering are expected to acquire multiple skills ranging from installation, routine preventive and corrective maintenance, construction, diagnosis, repairs and modifications of simple and medium scale electrical systems to developing technical reports, written work procedures and installation guidelines.

On top of the above skills set, students undertaking our program will also be able to analyse and design electrical systems for industrial, commercial equipment; specify materials, types of installations, production methods and quality standards; establish control on efficient functioning and safety of electrical systems, plan, organize and monitor maintenance and repair of electrical and Biomedical systems, and communicate clearly by applying ICT and other sciences in solving engineering problems.
