General Studies Department


Initially the General Studies Department (GS) was purely a supporting department to the Engineering fields offered at Arusha Technical College but today apart from offering cross-cutting courses, it is also a full fleged department recognized by NACTE.The GS Department now offers a three-year program leading to Ordinary Diploma in Laboratory Sciences and Technology. The three years cover courses for
Basic Technician Certificate in Laboratory Sciences and Technology (NTA Level 4),Technician Certificate in Laboratory Sciences and Technology (NTA Level 5), and Ordinary Diploma in Laboratory Sciences and Technology (NTA Level 6).

The GS produces laboratory technicians who are well equipped to work in the secondary schools laboratories as well as in industries.As a supporting department, the GS offers subjects that are cross-cutting and fundamental to engineering. The cross-cutting modules offered by the GS Department include: Advanced Mathematics, Physical Sciences,Communication Skills, and Entrepreneurship & Development Studies. The Department also utilizes its well-equipped science laboratories to provide consultancy services to the community in the area of science practical lessons to the neighboring secondary schools.The Department’s goal for the next 5 years is to establish new programs that are required by the market. Currently the Department is developing a curriculum for a new program for Diploma of Science with Education which aims at producing science and technical teachers that will teach in the secondary schools with science and technical specializations. In the academic year 2014/15, we anticipate to establish a Bachelor’s degree course in Laboratory Sciences and Technology. The General Studies Department currently has 19 qualified teaching staff and 3 Laboratory Technicians; furthermore it is looking forward to employing about 20 more staff in the academic year 2014/15. Courses offered by the General Studies Department Note that while NTA Level 4 and 5 of the academic year 2014/15 will use the re-viewed curricula, NTA level 6 will continue with the old one as we phase it out. Student Health Care Center

Did you know?

If you are a currently registered student at Arusha Technical College, you can take advantage of the many free and low cost services available through the Student Health Care Center. The ATC also has information on local health care providers to which you can be referred for complex problems and also Students Registered at ATC are Directly Registered With The National Health Insurance Fund.

You do not need an appointment for most of the services provided by the center. Services are available only to ATC students. Many services are free. The ATC is currently staffed by a full-time Registered Nurse Specialist. We encourage you to utilize our services and make us an integral part of your Studies at ATC.  We are committed to working with you to create a safe and positive environment that will meet your health care needs.

The College has a cafeteria, which has a sitting capacity of approximately 500 people at a time. Services provided by the cafeteria include meals for students and other customers holding seminars or meetings within the College premises. In compliance with the policy of public private-partnership, the college has subcontracted cafeteria services to a Private Service provider for effective and efficient operation.Students are not allowed to cook in halls of residences and therefore are adviced to use the catering services approved by the College.
